Ziko is a field-trained HeroRAT in the middle of becoming certified to locate landmines.
Birthdate: March 30, 2008
Length: 16 cm (body) 17 cm (tail)
Trainer: Shaibu Hamisi Dutilo
Personality: Calm, focused, dedicated, and eager to do his job well
Notable accomplishments:
Ziko comes from a very large family. A normal litter of rats is 2-3, however there are five in Ziko's family, and all are male: Manji, Mengi, Zumo, Stan and Ziko. His father Thomas is a demining rat and his mother is from the wild. In Feburary of 2009 Ziko passed his first blind test. This is the most difficult test, as neither the trainer nor the observer knows where the landmines are; it is only up to the HeroRAT to tell everyone where the mines are.
Current Stage in training:
Advanced Training- Ziko has just passed his second blind test! He is learning the stick method: One trainer and one rat harnessed to the end of a long pole, which is a bit of a specialty. This will enable him to efficently search around trees and other obstacles in the real mine field!

Hiya Ziko and Shaibu,
Last night I decided to adopt a HEROrat, and fell in love with Ziko, so chose him. I have 13 rats of my own, and know how special these little critters are (although they're nowhere near as big as you Ziko). I have always been amazed by these HEROrats, searching out landmines.
Take care of each other.
Sarah

Hellow my adopted Ziko,
I presented with adoption as a first aniversary present from Herorat team ( Bart & Maureen & the lovely family) I love the website with all the information given on daily logs and progress of the heros. I like to do a fund raising for the Herorats sometimes this year. This Friday we are having a fund raising at Dragonaires for Charity and we will discuss the whole idea with the team. I would like to play the DVD on the big screen and ask people to donate...
Take care and give a hug to All your collegues
Cheers,
Elaine

I adopt Allan today
Dear Steve and dear Allan,
my name is Lisa-Marie, I am ten years old and I live together with my parents in Germany in Berlin. Today I have seen a report about your fantastic project on television. I am so amazed about the rats and your work with rats, that I directly want to adopt a rat. My Mother helps me (don't think that my English is so good; I just have english lessons since two years in school).
And I decide to choosen Allan!!! Such a nice rat. Really lovely. Please caress him from me!!!
Nice greetings to you both from Lisa-Marie

Can't wait !!!
We were told all about hero rats by a lovely man at Exmoor Zoo, UK, and we chose Ziko to adopt, he is just so cute, we have 5 pet rats at home, and thought thet were big until we saw these!!
We can't wait to hear all about him.
We're so proud of you!!!!
Dear little Ziko,
You're such a good boy, and such a fast learner. Please be careful though, and please remind your friend Shaibu to be careful too.
We love seeing your pictures on the website, especially the ones where you're enjoying your well-deserved treats and playtime.
Best wishes from Belgium,
Alicia & Esfandiar
Ziko
The whole school wanted to do something after a visitor to the school explained the work of these rats and their trainers. We have just adopted Ziko with funds from our Parent Teacher Association. We look forward to hearing all about Ziko and his trainer. Thank you.
Adoption
This is so cool. How many "parents" does Ziko have now? It's Roxanne and Barry, an anonymous family, Jim, Sandee, Iris and me.
Any news from our darling? Still in training?
Anyway, I wish him, Shaibu und the rest of the Ziko-family a good time and much success in the fight against the plague that is called "land mines".
Cheers
Judy

I think the work being done by the herorats and their trainers is great. I decided to adopt Ziko in memory of my pet rat Hops who died a few days ago.
Keep up the hard work herorats!
What a Christmas blessing.
What a Christmas blessing. This reminds us that no matter how small, or how simple our gifts seem to us. When we put our gifts and talents into action, we can change the world, create peace, teach love and save lives. Our family adopted Ziko, in memory of our rat, Sugar Baby, who died last summer.
Hello Shaibu! Please give
Hello Shaibu!
Please give Ziko an extra treat today and tell him that we adopted him as a Christmas present for our dad and husband, Jim. We saw a program on PBS a little while ago about what great work you do and Jim will be so happy that such a small Ziko is making such a big difference in people's lives!
With warm regards,
Hanna & Lise
